But I think they are announcing this to further confuse us and our job.

Susan Moskwa which is a Google Webmasters Trends Analyst explains the reasoning why:

We’ve been telling people for a long time that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it’s the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true. We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it.
Great, good stuff. Let me know what you think about this announcement. I don’t really know what else to say about that.

Well we have all heard of the Google sandbox. Every time I think about it I think of the third Star Wars episode. Not the new ones, the old good ones. Where they are throwing people in the pit of the monster before Luke grabs his light saber and starts wiping peoples ass. Ohhh tangent. Honestly I don’t have any figures and I have been laid.

But anyhow, to us internet marketers that is a bad word. But what does it mean to the average IMer. Not much if you play by the rules. I am not saying Matt Cutts is God like as a lot of others think, but he said it and I will stick to it. Quote – Provide good content and we will reward you.

Basically don’t try to f**k us and we will notice this and realize that you are one of the good guys and keep you in the game.

Now I know everyone likes the easy button. But Google isn’t Staples. It is more like a farmers approach. Grow good websites, update them regularly with good content and in time you will see the fruits of your labor.

So it goes to say. Treat your work seriously and not try to follow those idiots online promising that this is a easy job and you can make millions over night. I feel sorry for those people that get online and think that there is a way to trick Google.

Google has dudes in lab coats and pocket protectors running around their offices. They be like smarter than me and shit. I be like trying to make money but end up saying “I can’t fight the reaper”.

Basically before I lead you down the road of wasting your time. I want to tell you that if you are playing the rules and really want succeed, treat Google as a friend. Actually read what it says in the webmasters tools. You do know the webmasters tools??

If you are new to this realm, forget a lot of the marketers that have the new best thing everyday. How you need to buy this or that. Granted there are good products out there. But they don’t come out everyday.

A lot of the good stuff, you can find on good blogs and doing your research. Everyone has an opinion. Mine might not be the best one or be completely be right.

But I will say this, you see this site, quite ugly right. I am like the mechanic that has his own car in the yard on blocks. I don’t pay attention to BS ideas. Because if you follow every new thing you hear you will never get anything done.

What you need to do is find a couple ideas and make your own opinions. People do test things and they seem to work for them. But it is difficult to have the same exact same thing in your business. This shit is mathematical in how things are ranked…don’t forget about the variables.

I digress, and ramble. If you think this post sucks or you think I am an idiot tell me. Or if you think I am cool, send me for Christmas an Monthly Cheese Club Subscription. At least leave your comment. I be like….liking that shit and stuff.

When posting videos in YouTube you want to make sure that you are playing by the rules. I recently went up to New York for SMX East and got to hear from the horses mouth (Google Video) on how to do this correctly. These are the recommendations that I was given and I would like to share these with you.

First DON’T keywords stuff the tags. Be honest about what your video is about and only include tags that are relevant to your video. The reason is because Google is looking hard at the videos nowadays, because a lot of people are trying to get away with stuff that worked in 2003 and think that this will work in video because the bots can’t read the video content. But humans still can and a Google rep, could visit your page and see this and ban you for being a nub.

Make sure your description is not too long. You will want to include the things you talk about in the video, because a good majority of people will read the description before watching the video. I don’t do this personally but some people do.

The next thing to make sure you do is keep it short. Try to get everything you want to get in, in around 2 minutes. People are not watching long videos anymore and will jump off your video as soon as it goes over 1 minute if you haven’t got to the meat of what you are trying to tell them.

You want to encourage comments, so ask for them. Comments help in the SEO process because something worth taking the time to comment on, must mean that it is good and the content is good.

Remember this statement when making your videos – Content is NOT king. Conversation is King and content is just something to have a conversation about. That right there will set you up for success. You want to have a video that will encourage a discussion. And you want to have a video that will encourage ratings.

You will also want to make use of Google Insight. It is in your Youtube account and you can see who is viewing your videos, where they come from and how often they viewed the video. Make sure to make use of this. It is analytics for your videos.

Google hasn’t merged Insight and Analytics but I tend to think that this will come into play in the next couple months. The reason I think this is because they hinted at it.

Last thing is to encourage people using your video on their site. The more your video is used on other peoples sites, the more Google will think that your video is important.

Opps…I almost forgot the most important part about your video that shouldn’t be overlooked. Make a badass title. You want the title to be searchable and because of Universal search in Google and “blended” search in Yahoo. You will want to make sure to have a headline that is awesome.

And if you plan on posting the video to other video sites, make sure that you think of using Google properties first. This would include, Google video, Aol Video and of course Youtube. Never will you see a video in Google that is from Yahoo video. Come on, they take care of their own.

Good luck and leave a comment so that I can answer your questions you may have. And please feel free to social bookmark this or tweet it. See you on the interwebs.

You might have heard it before and are curious as to why it is important to have a 301 redirect. Well the reason it is so important is because without it, you may be losing a lot of the links that would otherwise be on your site. See what happens is, your website is either http://website.com or http://www.website.com or http://www.website.com/index.html. And in Google’s eyes they see it as 3 different websites. This is not good.

What you need to do is decide which of these names you are going to decide to go with. Which one is really a choice that you have to make, but I will explain why it is better to choose one over the other.

First you might want to go with which ever has the most links going to it. You can find out first if you are having trouble like this by running a report at websitegrader.com. Then use a test inside Google to see which domain has the most links. Use the search query of link:http://www.website.com and then link:http://website.com. Which ever comes back with the most links, you should go with that one.

You have to make sure that you understand what all the redirects mean as well. You would only use a 302 redirect if you are temporarily changing over the link location of your website. Only do this if you are changing the site around and want the bots to come back. Don’t let them come back over and over again with a temporary redirect. The bot will get pissed and start to not frequent that page that often. Just a piece of advice that you should know.

You can download a free tool that will help to see if you have any 302’s or 404’s inside your site that you need to fix. It is called Xenu Link Sleuth. It is free and a pretty cool tool.

When deciding what form of your URL to use, take this into account. If your web address is long then you might want to use the http://website.com. The reason is because it is hard to put the whole URL in places that take only a certain amount of characters.

How to do this

Basically you need to find the index page of your website and put a piece of code in the
part of your website. That code is:
<?php
header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
header("Location: http://www.newdomain.com/page.html");
exit();
?>

Of course you will need to replace where it says “newdomain” with your actual domain. Actually put whatever URL you are choosing to use in that part of the code.

This should help and in time you will see an increase in your rankings because all the links will be pointing to the correct domain.

Good luck and leave any comment that will help readers here. And feel free to social bookmark this page.
